The Marine industry offers unique challenges which puts a variety of pressures on the performance and durability of certain materials. This is paramount with Marine cables, which require resistance to the environmental and physical challenges of the Marine environment.
At Loos and Company, our cable capabilities and customization options are vast. In order to serve the demanding conditions found in the Marine industry, we manufacture Cable, Strand and Wire Rope products in various sizes, constructions, and materials.
Our industry knowledge is what helps make us a trusted source of Marine products for industry professionals and corporations alike. Continue reading below to discover the strengths and applications of three specific constructions we offer: 3×19 Marine Coated Cable, 7×7 Cable and 6×19 Wire Rope.
3x19 Coated Cable
Our spin resistant and corrosion resistant design is perfect for maintaining buoyed monitoring equipment and data collection devices in environments ranging from warm and tropical (like the Gulf of Mexico and Indian Ocean) to cold and unforgiving (like the North Pacific and the Great Lakes).
Material Availability
We provide our 3×19 Marine Cable in a Galvanized Steel material with a black polypropylene jacket.
Common Marine Application
Due to the weatherability, corrosion resistance, spin resistance and strength of this construction, 3×19 Coated Cables are ideal for applications such as:
- Buoy Monitoring Equipment: Keeping buoys in place to warn of hazards or
- Data Collection Devices: Used to keep Marine research equipment stable and in position.
7x7 Cable
A 7×7 Cable consists of 7 strands, each of which is made up of 7 wires, making it a 7-strand cable with high levels of flexibility. Along with the flexibility, 7×7 provides moderate levels of tensile strength, and low levels of stretch resistance. The balance of flexibility and adequate strength makes 7×7 a versatile construction.
Material Availability
Our 7×7 Cable is available in 302/304, 305 and 316 stainless steel, Monel 400® and galvanized steel.
Common Marine Application
Due to the excellent flexibility, but lower tensile strength and stretch resistance of 7×7 Cable, its common Marine applications include:
- Light-Duty Hoisting: Capable of handling hoisting applications in which moderate loads are involved.
- Tethering Cables: Possesses adequate fatigue resistance and strength to be used to tether smaller vessels to docks.
6x19 Class Wire Ropes:
6×19 Wire Rope is made up of 6 strands, each made up of 19 wires. This heavy-duty construction allows for increased strength and durability. The high strength is paired with moderate flexibility, but excellent wear and abrasion resistance. This construction has the durability to handle some of the more demanding environments and applications in the Marine industry.
Material Availability
We offer 6×19 class Wire Ropes (including 6×25 and 6×39) in 302/304 stainless steel, bright carbon steel and galvanized steel.
Common Marine Application
Due to the superior strength, and adequate flexibility of 6×19 class Wire Ropes, its most common Marine applications include:
- Heavy-Duty Mooring and Towing: Used for secure larger ships to docks, or for larger towing applications due to its excellent strength.
- Ship Lifting and Cargo Handling: Commonly used for lifting operations on ships, such as cargo handling or lifting cranes due to its high tensile strength.
- Subsea Research: The combination of strength and fatigue resistance allows our Wire Rope to be used to position research equipment and collect data.
