At Central Wire, our alloy capabilities are a main reason why so many companies rely on us to fulfill their project needs. Finding manufacturers with the knowledge, manufacturing capabilities, and depth of raw materials that we have can be a very difficult task, which is why we remain a trusted supplier for global leaders across various industries.
A Trusted Spring Wire Supplier
Our Spring Wire product line is built on the reliability of our manufacturing and raw materials, and can handle repeated use in harsh conditions; it can also be supplied with our patented Techcote© coating to reduce galling, providing excellent coiling ability at high speeds.
Quality control and premium raw materials are the main reasons why we are a trusted source for Spring Wire, catering to various different industries. We manufacture a full line of economical corrosion-resistant Spring Wire in stainless, nickel and other alloys.
All of our Spring products can be certified to ASTM A313 or other applicable industry standards, and can also be manufactured to your custom specifications. The quality and coiling ability of our Spring Wire preserves equipment life, minimizes downtime, and maximizes your production throughput.
17-7PH®: A Central Wire Specialty
One of the strongest and most versatile alloys we provide, 17-7PH®, is a standout in this product line.
Central Wire is the leading producer of Aerospace and Commercial quality 17-7PH® Spring Wire in both the United States and the United Kingdom, built on decades of metallurgical processing experience to meet the specifications requirements of the spring applications that we serve.
Our research, process development, and tight control on critical wire-drawing parameters serve to optimize the characteristics of our 17-7PH® Spring Wire to be fully compliant with AMS 5678 and ASTM A313 standards.
What Makes 17-7PH® Stand Out
17-7PH® is a chromium-nickel-aluminum precipitation hardening Stainless Steel which offers similar corrosion resistance to 302, but can achieve higher strength after precipitation hardening due to its aluminum additions.
It is an ideal alloy for applications that require good formability, high strength and hardness, and minimum distortion upon heat treatment. 17-7PH® also provides excellent properties for flat springs at temperatures as high as 315°C (600°F).
The alloy begins as a fully austenitic structure in the solution treated stage and undergoes a strain-induced phase transformation to a martensitic structure from cold work during the wire drawing process, providing enhanced strength; this is commonly known as “Condition C”. The material can be further strengthened by aging at elevated temperatures to forms submicroscopic nickel-aluminum based precipitates, with the most common temperature being 900°F (Condition CH900).
Its chemical composition is as follows:
UNS S17700 – Al: 0.75-1.50, Cr: 16.0-18.0, Ni: 6.5-7.75
Spring Wire Applications in Demanding Industries
The quality and expertise behind our Spring Wire manufacturing helps us meet the demanding conditions of the modern industries that we serve. Our Spring Wire can be found in mission-critical Aerospace applications, as well as various commercial industries, including:
- Aerospace: 17-7 is used in parts that require high strength and high thermal stability after repeated use, such as fasteners, springs, and washers.
- Agriculture: Strength and consistency play a pivotal role in livestock fencing, gates, and inside harvesting equipment.
- Architecture: Stainless Spring Wire adds aesthetic and functional value to architectural projects.
- Mining: Spring Wire used in modern mining must be able to withstand crushing forces, intense vibration and heavy weight.
- Oil and Gas: Downhole applications require the corrosion resistance and high strength of our stainless Spring Wire.
